Birmingham City Breaks & The Ikon Gallery
Birmingham is a vibrant city in the West Midlands (a county in England and it is a really popular destination for short city breaks and day trips. The city features a huge selection of first class visitor attractions including a great many Listed churches and other important structures as well as many museums and galleries, including Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery.
Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery is an art gallery specialising in contemporary art which is housed in the building which was previously the Oozells Street Board School in Brindleyplace, however it wasn’t always so suitably housed.
The Ikon was founded in the year nineteen sixty four by Angus Skene and 4 students of art. The four artists were; Robert Groves, Jesse Bruton, Robert Groves and Sylvani Merilion. Skene had bought a piece of art by David Prentice and the pair of them discussed the endless problems suffered by local artists, including the extreme lack of venues and general support for local artists. The discussion resulted in the basic concepts for Ikon which was to be a “gallery without walls”.
Skene financed the project initially, which consisted of mobile exhibitions in such unusual locations as cinemas and post offices in a motorcycle sidecar. The concept was to make the general public more aware of art. To reduce costs staffing was by the family, friends and the founding artists who did not charge for their services. After a while the Ikon Gallery obtained a glass walled kiosk in the infamous Bull Ring shopping centre.
During the next couple of decades the Ikon Gallery moved from place to place until 1997 when it purchased, with aid from the National Lottery, the current premises, the former Oozells Street Board School. In recent years the Gallery has held a selection of exhibitions and its continual ability to produce the superb has caused it to become surprisingly popular, to such an extent that in 2006 it opened a second gallery, the Ikon Eastside in Digbeth.

Also it is important to know that although there are many Birmingham guest houses and hotels finding Birmingham bed and breakfast can sometimes be pretty difficult. Because of this it is crucially important to book your accommodation at the earliest opportunity. You should be aware that the closest airport is roughly eight miles distance from the center of the city just off the A45, near the M42. You will easily find a useful number of hotels and b & b’s reasonably close to the airport.
