El Siglo de Oro or Spain’s Golden Age was when most of Spain’s exceptional masters came about; they have created some of the most extraordinary paintings in the world. One painter that made a mark and became most well-known of them all is Diego Velasquez; he became so famous that he is also known as one of the most important personality in his generation. Diego Velasquez was said to have found favor in the courts of King Philip IV because of his great talent as a painter especially of portraits.
In June 5, 1599 from a family of middle class in the town of Seville, Diego Velasquez was born and is the eldest of six children. As early as age of eleven, Velasquez commenced his apprenticeship with master painter Francisco Pacheco, and by age eighteen he became a great artist as certified by the painters’ guild which permitted him to work as a professional. Over the years, Velasquez mostly produced religious scenes and sold them for profit in churches and taverns, eventually being able to buy his own house and rent out another one; this was how he supported his family after he had become the husband of Francisco Pacheco’s daughter.
Diego Velasquez’s career was defined by numerous masterpiece of exceptional artworks in the realistic style which gave him a lot of attention; something that not a lot of painters enjoyed during his time. Upon meeting Marques de Spinola, he made one of his famous paintings called Surrender of Breda which presents the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the painting he was in awe of Velasquez’ talent and how brilliant he was as a painter, extraordinarily capturing emotion through the realism in his portraits. However, Diego will pursue art and he would produce an artwork that would be more famous and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most sought after piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.
