New York’s Museum Of Modern Art (MoMA)

If you are a follower of great art then there are few (if any) better places to visit in the United States than the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

This museum, located at 11 West 53rd St. in Midtown Manhattan, is among the most frequently visited and respected museums in the US. About two million people visit the museum. While that is a quite a lot of visitors; it should be noted that it’s about half as many as visit New York City’s two most popular museums the Natural History Museum and the Met. I believe the popularity of these other museums is due to them being more “family friendly.”

The Museum of Modern Art first opened in October of 1929 not long after the stock market crash that began the Great Depression of the 1930s. The idea for this modern art museum was started by Abby Rockefeller and two female friends of hers named Mary Quinn Sullivan and Lillie P. Bliss. It was the year 1939 when the museum was moved to West 53rd Street.

MoMA’s Van Gogh and Picasso exhibitions in the 1930s were important in helping to build the reputations they continue to hold as some of the most influential artists ever.

Today visitors can see many famous works of art at the Museum of Modern Art including Les Desmoiselles d’Avignon by Picasso, I and the Village by Marc Chagall, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, The Dance by Henri Matisse, Love Song by Giorgio De Chirico, along with work by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Andrew Wyeth, Paul Cezanne, and Kazimir Malevich.

If you are not a native New Yorker and you are planning on visiting New York’s famous museums on a trip to NYC then you may want to think about ordering a New York City Pass which includes entry to MoMA among over 50 other tourist activities. It’s a big time & money saver if you’re planning on getting the full NYC experience on your vacation.
