The Very Definition Of Classic LPs

Vintage just means it’s better, to some people. With the talk of classic vinyl pretty much any form of an LP could be considered a classic given the reason that they are simply not being manufactured as they once were. In this digital age, all music is becoming digital. However, before there was a CD or MP3 there was vinyl. And before there was American Idol there was Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Being a serious music collector means you’ve collected Frank Sinatra vinyl.

It’s hard to imagine what kind of impact a singer can have before the age of MTV or YouTube.

All it took was Frank Sinatra to show up for a gig to produce fan thrills. armies of dedicated female fans called “bobby-soxers” swooned at his every song. Around the 40’s, Sinatra made the round on radio shows performing alongside stars like Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Towards the end of the 40’s, some of the sparkle on Frank’s career began to wane, but he came back with power thanks to a star part in the movies that had nothing to do with singing. After an intense lobbying drive, Frank was hired to play a supporting part in From Here to Eternity. His work earned him an Academy Award and began his singing career all over again.

Frank Sinatra started recording with Capitol Records in 1953 where he recorded a wide variety of classic vinyl albums. For these concept albums, Frank partnered with prominent arrangers Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins and Billy May.

Among the collectible albums in this particular Frank Sinatra vinyl collaboration are Swing Easy (1954), In the Wee Small Hours (1955), Songs For Swingin’ Lovers (1956) and the very popular Come Fly With Me (1957). All of these albums were chart-topping successes for Sinatra.

After several years working with Capitol Records, Frank started up his own label, Reprise Records. His first album, Ring-A-Ding-Ding (1961), was an instant classic. It was during the Reprise years that Frank created the Rat Pack. Along with Frank there was Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. The Rat Pack played to packed houses in Vegas, Chicago and New York. These live outings were recorded for all to enjoy. Pretty much anything with the Rat Pack is considered a very cool collectible.

It’s not often where you’ll find a single performer who can be a success in movies, music, TV and concerts.

Anyone who listens to classic pop music knows Frank Sinatra is such a star.
